Sonographer Job Summary

Crete IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Crete IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Crete IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Crete IL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Crete ILAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Crete IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Crete home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Crete IL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Crete IL area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Crete IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Crete IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Crete health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Crete IL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Crete IL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
