Apple River IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Apple River IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Apple River IL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Apple River IL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Illinois or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Apple River ILAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Apple River IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Apple River home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Apple River IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Apple River IL area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Apple River IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Apple River IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Apple River healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Apple River IL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Apple River IL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
