Alsip IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Alsip IL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Alsip IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Alsip IL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Illinois or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Alsip ILAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Alsip IL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Alsip home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Alsip IL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Alsip IL area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Alsip IL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Alsip IL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Alsip health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Alsip IL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Alsip IL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
