Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Rexburg ID ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Rexburg ID clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Rexburg ID ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Rexburg ID hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Idaho or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Rexburg IDAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Rexburg ID outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Rexburg home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Rexburg ID ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Rexburg ID area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Rexburg ID health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Rexburg ID hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Rexburg health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Idaho healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Rexburg ID residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rexburg ID area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
