Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Mesa ID ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Mesa ID hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Mesa ID ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Mesa ID clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Idaho or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Mesa IDAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Mesa ID outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Mesa home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mesa ID ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mesa ID area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mesa ID health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Mesa ID hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Mesa medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Idaho healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Mesa ID residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mesa ID area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
