Sonographer Job Description

Varnell GA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Varnell GA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Varnell GA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Varnell GA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Georgia or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Varnell GAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Varnell GA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Varnell home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Varnell GA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Varnell GA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Varnell GA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Varnell GA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Varnell healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Georgia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Varnell GA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Varnell GA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
