Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Zellwood FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Zellwood FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Zellwood FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Zellwood FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Zellwood FLAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Zellwood FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Zellwood home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Zellwood FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Zellwood FL area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Zellwood FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Zellwood FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Zellwood health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Zellwood FL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Zellwood FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
