Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Williston FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Williston FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Williston FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Williston FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Williston FLAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Williston FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Williston home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Williston FL ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Williston FL area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Williston FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Williston FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Williston medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Williston FL residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Williston FL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
