Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Pomona Park FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pomona Park FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Pomona Park FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Pomona Park FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Pomona Park FLAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Pomona Park FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Pomona Park home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Pomona Park FL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pomona Park FL area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Pomona Park FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Pomona Park FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Pomona Park healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Pomona Park FL home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pomona Park FL area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
