Sonogram Tech Work Description

Plant City FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Plant City FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Plant City FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Plant City FL clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Plant City FLAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Plant City FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Plant City home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Plant City FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Plant City FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Plant City FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Plant City FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Plant City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Plant City FL residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Plant City FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Plant City, Florida

Plant City is an incorporated city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States, approximately midway between Brandon and Lakeland along Interstate 4. The population was 34,721 at the 2010 census.[5]

Despite many thinking it was named for flora grown at plant nurseries (especially vegetables and fruits, as well as tropical houseplants) in its tropical Gulf Coast climate, it was named after prominent railroad developer Henry B. Plant[6] (see Plant System). Plant City is known as the winter strawberry capital of the world[7] and hosts the annual Florida Strawberry Festival in the late winter (usually in February or early March), which is attended by people from all over the United States as well as many people from around the world.

Plant City's original name was Ichepuckesassa (also known as Idasukshed) after the Indian village that once occupied the territory.[6] Its name caused so much confusion that the city was renamed "Cork", after the postmaster's Irish hometown. It was finally given the name "Plant City" in commemoration of Henry B. Plant and his railroad, which significantly boosted the commerce in this primarily agricultural community by incorporating it with the South Florida Railroad.
