Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Myakka City FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Myakka City FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Myakka City FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Myakka City FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Myakka City FLAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Myakka City FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Myakka City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Myakka City FL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Myakka City FL area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Myakka City FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Myakka City FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Myakka City healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Myakka City FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Myakka City FL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
