Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Mount Dora FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Mount Dora FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Mount Dora FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Mount Dora FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in Mount Dora FLAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mount Dora FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Mount Dora home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Mount Dora FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mount Dora FL area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Mount Dora FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Mount Dora FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Mount Dora healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Mount Dora FL home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mount Dora FL area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Mount Dora, Florida

Mount Dora is a city in Lake County, Florida, US. As of 2017, the United States Census Bureau estimates the Mount Dora population at 14,536.[5] It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee, FL, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1880, Mount Dora is known for its small town charm. It has many antique shops in the downtown area. The downtown area overlooks Lake Dora. Mount Dora is home to one of three freshwater lighthouses in Florida. It hosts many monthly festivals and is known as the "Festival City."

The town of Mount Dora began in 1874 when the area was settled by David Simpson, his wife, and two children.[6] In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the town's first postmaster, and later a major real estate developer for the area.[7] A post office called Mount Dora has been in operation since 1883.[8] Tremain named the unincorporated village Royellou, after his children, Roy, Ella, and Louis.[7]

The community was renamed for Dora Ann Drawdy, who was an early settler of the town in the mid-1880s. In 1846, the surveyors named Lake Dora after her, and in 1883 the town was renamed after the lake.[9] The Mount in Mount Dora reflects the fact that the town is on a plateau 184 feet above sea level.[9] In addition to this, Dora is memorialized through Dora Drawdy Way, an alleyway located in the downtown area.
