Sonographer Occupation Description

Lecanto FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lecanto FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Lecanto FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Lecanto FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lecanto FLAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lecanto FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Lecanto home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Lecanto FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lecanto FL area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lecanto FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Lecanto FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Lecanto medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Lecanto FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lecanto FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
