Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Istachatta FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Istachatta FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Istachatta FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through Istachatta FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Istachatta FLAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Istachatta FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Istachatta home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Istachatta FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Istachatta FL area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Istachatta FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with Istachatta FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Istachatta health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Istachatta FL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Istachatta FL area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
