Sonogram Tech Job Description

Indian Rocks Beach FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Indian Rocks Beach FL hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Indian Rocks Beach FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Indian Rocks Beach FL clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Florida or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Indian Rocks Beach FLAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Indian Rocks Beach FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Indian Rocks Beach home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Indian Rocks Beach FL ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Indian Rocks Beach FL area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Indian Rocks Beach FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Indian Rocks Beach FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Indian Rocks Beach medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Indian Rocks Beach FL home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Indian Rocks Beach FL area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
