Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Grand Ridge FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Grand Ridge FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Grand Ridge FL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Grand Ridge FLAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Grand Ridge FL outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Grand Ridge home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Grand Ridge FL area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Grand Ridge FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Grand Ridge FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Grand Ridge FL residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Grand Ridge FL area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
