Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Fort Pierce FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Fort Pierce FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Fort Pierce FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Fort Pierce FL hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Fort Pierce FLAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Fort Pierce FL hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Fort Pierce home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Fort Pierce FL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Fort Pierce FL area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Fort Pierce FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have associations with Fort Pierce FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Fort Pierce medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Fort Pierce FL residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Fort Pierce FL area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
