Eustis FL sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Eustis FL, the next step is to begin the procedure of picking a school. First, you need to find the right program that will furnish the appropriate education to become a skilled professional. So it’s very important that you research each college in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Most prospective students will begin by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be considered when making a decision, but there are other important factors as well. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this article. Sonographer Job Summary

Eustis FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Eustis FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Eustis FL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Eustis FL hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Florida or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Eustis FLAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Eustis FL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Eustis home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Eustis FL ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Eustis FL area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Eustis FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Eustis FL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Eustis health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Eustis FL home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Eustis FL area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
