Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Ellenton FL ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Ellenton FL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Ellenton FL ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Ellenton FL clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Florida or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ellenton FLAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ellenton FL outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Ellenton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Ellenton FL ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Ellenton FL area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ellenton FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Ellenton FL hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Ellenton medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Florida healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Ellenton FL residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ellenton FL area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
