Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Vernon Rockville CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Vernon Rockville CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Vernon Rockville CT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Vernon Rockville CT clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Connecticut or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Vernon Rockville CTAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Vernon Rockville CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Vernon Rockville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Vernon Rockville CT area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Vernon Rockville CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Vernon Rockville CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Vernon Rockville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Vernon Rockville CT residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vernon Rockville CT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
