  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Niantic CT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Connecticut or whichever state you elect to practice in.

But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Niantic home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Niantic CT area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Niantic CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Niantic CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Niantic CT home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Niantic CT area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
