Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Ivoryton CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ivoryton CT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Ivoryton CT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Ivoryton CT hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ivoryton CTAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Ivoryton CT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Ivoryton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Ivoryton CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ivoryton CT area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Ivoryton CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Ivoryton CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Ivoryton healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Ivoryton CT residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ivoryton CT area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Essex, Connecticut

Essex is one of the few American towns to ever be attacked by a foreign power; this occurred on April 8, 1814, and the economic losses were among the largest sustained by the United States during the War of 1812. 28 vessels, with a total value estimated to be close to $200,000 (at a time when a very large two story home in Essex, then known as Potapoug Point, would have been worth no more than $1,000), were destroyed by the British.[1] One historian has called it the "Pearl Harbor" of that war.[2]

On that date, approximately 136 British marines and sailors under the command of Richard Coote[1][3] (or Coot[2]) rowed 6 boats from four British warships (the Hogue, Endymion, Maidstone and Borer) anchored in Long Island Sound, 6 miles up the Connecticut River, past the unmanned fort in Old Saybrook, arriving at the boat launch at the foot of Main Street in Essex close to 4 A.M. The boats were armed with swivel guns loaded with grapeshot, the officers armed with swords and pistols, the marines with "Brown Bess" muskets, and the sailors with torches and axes; they responded to the single cannon fired by the town's surprised defenders with a massive volley, neither side incurring any casualties. They quickly commandeered the town, eliciting a promise of no resistance from the Essex militia in return for promising not to harm the townspeople or burn their homes, while a messenger rode to Fort Trumbull in New London for help. A dubious local myth states that Coote did not burn the town as a favor to a local merchant who greeted him with a secret Masonic handshake.[2]

The British marched to the Bushnell Tavern (now the Griswold Inn), then seized the town's stores of rope (each ship of that time requiring 8 miles of rope) and, according to the April 19, 1814 Hartford Courant, "$100,000 or upwards" worth of rum (acquired from the East Indies in trade for beef and wood from Connecticut).[2]
