Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Bridgewater CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bridgewater CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Bridgewater CT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Bridgewater CT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bridgewater CTAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bridgewater CT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Bridgewater home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Bridgewater CT ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bridgewater CT area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bridgewater CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Bridgewater CT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Bridgewater healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Bridgewater CT home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bridgewater CT area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
