Sonogram Tech Work Description

Avondale CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Avondale CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Avondale CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Avondale CO hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Avondale COAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Avondale CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Avondale home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Avondale CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Avondale CO area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Avondale CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have relationships with Avondale CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Avondale health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Avondale CO residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Avondale CO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
