Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Taft CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Taft CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Taft CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Taft CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Taft CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Taft CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Taft home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Taft CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Taft CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Taft CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Taft CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Taft healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Taft CA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Taft CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Taft, California

Taft (formerly Moron, Moro, and Siding Number Two)[9] is a city in the foothills at the extreme southwestern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. Taft is located 32 miles (51 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield,[9] at an elevation of 955 feet (291 m).[7] The population was 9,327 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.1 square miles (39.1 km2).

The town began as Siding Number Two on the Sunset Railroad.[9] According to a display at the West Kern Oil Museum, local residents asked the Southern Pacific Railroad if the station could be named Moro when the rails arrived in about 1900, but a railroad official declined because the name would be too easily confused with the coastal town of Morro Bay. Instead, the railroad directed the station be called Moron, a word which as yet had no association with stupidity. Pictures of local businesses, including the Moron Pharmacy, hang in the museum.

Taft is situated in a major petroleum and natural gas production region in California, and is one of the few remaining towns in the United States which exist exclusively because of nearby oil reserves. The discovery of oil in the region occurred in the late 19th century near Maricopa, seven miles (11.27 km) south of Taft. Many other oil and gas accumulations were discovered around Taft during the early-to-mid-20th century, notably the Midway field (near Fellows, California), Sunset field (later found to be part of the same trend, accounting for the modern combined name of Midway-Sunset), and the Buena Vista. The town is built directly between these two huge fields. The operational activities within these fields, as well as Occidental Petroleum's Elk Hills Oil Field north of Taft, have been the economic lifeblood of the town for over 100 years.
