Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Le Grand CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Le Grand CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Le Grand CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Le Grand CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Le Grand CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Le Grand CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Le Grand home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Le Grand CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Le Grand CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Le Grand CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Le Grand CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Le Grand medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Le Grand CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Le Grand CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
