Sonographer Occupation Summary

Fairfax CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Fairfax CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Fairfax CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Fairfax CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Fairfax home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.
