Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Wellton AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wellton AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Wellton AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Wellton AZ hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Wellton AZAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wellton AZ outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Wellton home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Wellton AZ ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Wellton AZ area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Wellton AZ health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Wellton AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Wellton medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Wellton AZ home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wellton AZ area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
