Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Queen Creek AZ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Queen Creek AZ clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Queen Creek AZ ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Queen Creek AZ clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Arizona or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Queen Creek AZAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Queen Creek AZ hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Queen Creek home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Queen Creek AZ ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Queen Creek AZ area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Queen Creek AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Queen Creek AZ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Queen Creek health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Arizona healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Queen Creek AZ residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Queen Creek AZ area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
