Chugiak AK ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Chugiak AK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Chugiak AK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Chugiak AK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Alaska or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Chugiak AKAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Chugiak AK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Chugiak home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Chugiak AK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Chugiak AK area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Chugiak AK health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Chugiak AK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Chugiak health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alaska healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Chugiak AK residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Chugiak AK area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Chugiak, Anchorage

The name "Chugiak" comes from a Dena'ina word meaning "place of many places". Chugiak was first heavily settled in the 1950s, primarily by the homesteading by former military personnel who had served in Alaska during World War II. It is currently one of the main sites of suburban expansion near Anchorage.[citation needed]

There are about 8,300 residents, most of whom work in Anchorage or the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and are spread out mainly along the Glenn Highway. The urban cluster of Anchorage Northeast (including Chugiak and surroundings) has an estimated population of 31,000 (2010), covering an area of 39 km².[citation needed]

Chugiak is also the home of the "Birchwood Shooting & Recreational Park", (adjacent to the Birchwood Airport), the largest rifle, pistol, and shotgun range facility in the State of Alaska. The annual Alaska State Trap and Skeet competitions are held there.[citation needed]
