Wolf Run, Ohio

Wolf Run is an unincorporated community in eastern Springfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 43970.[1] The stream of Wolf Run, which flows northward past the community, is a tributary of Goose Creek, which in turn flows southward to meet Cross Creek in Harrison County's German Township, which in turn flows eastward to meet the Ohio River at Mingo Junction.[2]

Woodsfield, Ohio

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,384 people, 1,054 households, and 617 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,180.2 inhabitants per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 1,248 housing units at an average density of 617.8 per square mile (238.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

There were 1,054 households of which 25.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.5% were non-families. 37.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.81.

The median age in the village was 45.9 years. 21.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 20.2% were from 25 to 44; 24.9% were from 45 to 64; and 26.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 45.5% male and 54.5% female.

Woodstock '94

Woodstock '94 was a music festival organized in 1994 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival of 1969. It was promoted as "2 More Days of Peace and Music". The poster used to promote the first concert was revised to feature two doves perched on the neck of an electric guitar, instead of the original acoustic one.

The 1994 concert was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 13 and 14,[1] with a third day (Friday, August 12) added later. Tickets to the festival cost $135 each.[2] The weather was rainy that weekend, and by Saturday much of the field had turned into mud.

Though only 164,000 tickets were sold,[3] the crowd at Woodstock '94 was estimated at 550,000.[4] The size of the crowd was larger than concert organizers had planned for and by the second night many of the event policies were logistically unenforceable. The major issues related to security, when attendees arrived, left or returned to the site, and the official concert food-beverage-vendor policy initially restricting attendees from entering with supplies of food, drinks and above all, alcohol. With the concert site mostly enclosed by simple chain link fences, there was hardly any difficulty for many attendees to enter freely along with carrying beer and other banned items. The security staff, along with the entrance and exit staff, could not continue reasonable monitoring of increasingly vast numbers entering, exiting, inspecting, while at the same time maintaining safety, security and peaceful atmosphere.

Grant County, Kentucky

Grant County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,662.[1] Its county seat is Williamstown.[2] The county was formed in 1820 and named for Colonel John Grant,[3] who led a party of settlers in 1779 to establish Grant's Station, in today's Bourbon County, Kentucky.

Grant County residents voted to allow full alcohol sales in the county by a margin of 56% to 44% in a special election on December 22, 2015.[4] In the 19th century, Grant County contained multiple saloons.[5]

The Grant County News, established in 1906 and published in Williamstown, is preserved on microfilm by the University of Kentucky Libraries. The microfilm holdings are listed in a master negative database on the UK Libraries Preservation and Digital Programs website.[6]

Woodville, Ohio

Woodville was the midway point on the Western Reserve and Maumee Turnpike, which was also known as the "Old Mud Pike" because of the thick mud that often mired animals and vehicles alike. It was the first permanent route across the Black Swamp. The toll road connected Perrysburg with Lower Sandusky, which has since been renamed Fremont.

A mile marker from the road remains at 100 East Main Street, in front of the village pharmacy. Several of the milestones are still in place along the 31 miles (50 km) stretch between present day Fremont and Perrysburg. The route is currently designated U.S. Route 20.

Woodville is also the point at which U.S. 20 crosses the Portage River. The former Pennsylvania Railroad also crossed the Portage River in Woodville. The line was at one time a main route from Toledo to Pittsburgh.

Williston, Ohio

Williston is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in northern Allen Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States, located along State Route 579. It is located in the northwestern part of the state, near Toledo. Its ZIP code is 43468. Its population was 211 people, according to the 2000 Census. The town received regional attention with the arraignment of a local bank robbery suspect from Williston, accused of robbing the Genoa Banking Company's Millbury branch, in federal court.[1]

Wooster, Ohio

Wooster is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Wayne County. The municipality is located in northeastern Ohio approximately 50 mi (80 km) SSW of Cleveland, 35 mi (56 km) SW of Akron and 30 mi (48 km) W of Canton. The population was 24,811 at the 2000 census and 26,119 at the 2010 Census.[6] The city is the largest in Wayne County, and the center of the Wooster Micropolitan Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau). Wooster has the main branch and administrative offices of the Wayne County Public Library.[7]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.36 square miles (42.37 km2), of which, 16.31 square miles (42.24 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 26,119 people, 10,733 households, and 6,244 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,601.4 inhabitants per square mile (618.3/km2). There were 11,822 housing units at an average density of 724.8 per square mile (279.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.2% White, 3.6% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

Willoughby, Ohio

Willoughby's first permanent settler was David Abbott in 1798, who operated a gristmill.[7] Abbott and his family had close relations to the local tribe of Erie Indians along the banks of the river the Indians called the "Sha-ga-rin" or Clear Water. This river was later called the Chagrin River, though the derivation of the name remains in dispute.

In 1835, the village was permanently named "Willoughby" in honor of Dr. Westel Willoughby, Jr., a public health official that the founders of a short-lived Medical College, which was based in the city, hoped to attract to the area. Many historical buildings from this period survive to this date, affording the downtown Willoughby area some outstanding specimens of 19th century architecture.

Over time, Willoughby sent citizens into every major U.S. military conflict. Several memorials and historical relics are displayed in Wes Point Park, the center of downtown Willoughby, to honor those that have served.

Worthington, Ohio

Worthington is a city in Franklin County, Ohio, United States, and is a northern suburb of the larger Columbus. The population was 13,575 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1803 by the Scioto Company led by James Kilbourne, who was later elected to the United States House of Representatives, and named in honor of Thomas Worthington, who later became governor of Ohio.

On May 5, 1802 a group of prospective settlers founded the Scioto Company at the home of Rev. Eber B. Clark in Granby, Connecticut for the purpose of forming a settlement between the Muskingum River and Great Miami River in the Ohio Country. James Kilbourne was elected president and Josiah Topping secretary (McCormick 1998:7). On August 30, 1802 James Kilbourne and Nathaniel Little arrived at Colonel Thomas Worthington's home in Chillicothe, Ohio. They tentatively reserved land along the Scioto River on the Pickaway Plains for their new settlement (McCormick 1998:17).

On October 5, 1802, the Scioto Company met in Granby, Connecticut and decided not to purchase the lands along the Scioto River on the Pickaway Plains, but rather to buy land 30 miles (48 km) farther north from Dr. Jonas Stanbery and his partner, an American Revolutionary War general, Jonathan Dayton. Sixteen thousand acres (65 km²) were purchased along the Whetstone River (now known as the Olentangy River) at $1.50 per acre (McCormick 1998:19-27). This land was part of the United States Military District surveyed by Israel Ludlow in 1797 and divided into townships 5 miles (8.0 km) square.[6]

The Wind in the Willows

The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternately slow-moving and fast-paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphised animals in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley.

In 1908, Grahame retired from his position as secretary of the Bank of England. He moved back to Berkshire, where he had lived as a child, and spent his time by the River Thames doing much as the animal characters in his book do – as the book says, "simply messing about in boats" – and expanding the bedtime stories he had earlier told his son Alastair into a manuscript for the book.

In 2003, The Wind in the Willows was listed at number 16 in the BBC's survey The Big Read.[1] More than a century after its original publication, it was adapted again for the stage in 2016 musical by Julian Fellowes.
