Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Willow Creek MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Willow Creek MT hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Willow Creek MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Willow Creek MT clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Montana or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Willow Creek MTAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Willow Creek MT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Willow Creek home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Willow Creek MT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Willow Creek MT area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Willow Creek MT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Willow Creek MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Willow Creek health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Willow Creek MT residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Willow Creek MT area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
