Sonogram Tech Work Description

Uniontown KS ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Uniontown KS hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Uniontown KS ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Uniontown KS clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kansas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Uniontown KSAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Uniontown KS hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Uniontown home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Uniontown KS ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Uniontown KS area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Uniontown KS health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Uniontown KS hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Uniontown medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Kansas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Uniontown KS residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Uniontown KS area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
