White House, Tennessee

White House is a city in Robertson and Sumner counties in the United States state of Tennessee. The population was 7,220 at the 2000 census. It is approximately twenty-two miles north of downtown Nashville. According to the city website a special census was conducted in 2008 that placed the city population at 9,891 residents, with 3,587 households within the city limits. The population was 10,255 at the 2010 census which showed growth of 3,000 people from 2000 to 2010. The 2013 population was 10,752.

The area that is now White House was purchased around 1828 by Richard Stone Wilks, a settler from Virginia. A trail running from Kentucky to Nashville, originally created by Native Americans, cut through the area. This trail was originally known as the Louisville & Nashville Turnpike during the mid-19th century. In 1928, the trail was renamed US Highway 31W.

In the mid-19th century, the Carter, Thomas, and Hough Stagecoach Company traveled the L&N Turnpike carrying passengers. A typical stop along the way was a white, two-story house built by Richard Wilks in 1829. The house was a popular stop for lodging, food, and changing out horses. President Andrew Jackson was even heard to have stayed here during his travels between his home and the White House. During this time, houses were rarely painted white, particularly in this underdeveloped area. The stage coach drivers began to call this stop and the surrounding area White House.[7]

Nutbush, Tennessee

Nutbush is a rural unincorporated community in Haywood County, Tennessee, in the western part of the state.[1] It was established in the early 19th century by European-American settlers who brought along or bought enslaved African Americans as workers to develop the area's cotton plantations. The African Americans built houses and churches that still stand.

Agriculture is still the most important element of the rural economy, focused on the cultivation and processing of cotton. This has been the commodity crop since the antebellum years, when its cultivation depended on slave labor. As of 2006, cotton was processed in one cotton-processing plant in the community.

Nutbush is best known as the birthplace and childhood home of singer Tina Turner, who described the town in her 1973 song "Nutbush City Limits". In 2002, a segment of Tennessee State Route 19 near Nutbush was named "Tina Turner Highway" in her honor.[3][4][5] This is also the home town of blues pioneer musicians and recording artists Hambone Willie Newbern and Sleepy John Estes.[6]

White Pine, Tennessee

European settlers first arrived in what is now White Pine in the 1780s. The community, originally known as "Dandridge Crossing", did not become a town until after the Civil War, when a railroad route was constructed in the area. The site chosen for the town was where the railroad tracks intersected a local stagecoach road. The town was laid out in the early 1870s. According to tradition, the town was named after a large pine tree that once stood along Main Street.[1]

White Pine is located in northeastern Jefferson County at 36°6′31″N 83°17′31″W / 36.10861°N 83.29194°W / 36.10861; -83.29194 (36.108500, -83.291869).[7] The town limits extend north to the Hamblen County line, crossing into Hamblen County at Interstate 81 exit 8.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 1,997 people, 828 households, and 579 families residing in the town. The population density was 786.7 people per square mile (303.6/km²). There were 886 housing units at an average density of 349.0 per square mile (134.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.74% White, 0.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 2.20% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.50% of the population.

Tennessee State Route 21

State Route 21 (SR 21) is a two lane highway that runs from the Mississippi River west of Tiptonville, Tennessee to the Kentucky state line north of Union City. This road provides access to Reelfoot Lake State Park.

SR 21 begins as a secondary highway in rural Obion County at the Kentucky state line, at the intersection of KY 116 and KY 239. It then travels south to an intersection with US 51/SR 3/SR 22 just north of Union City. It then enters Union City on N Clover Street, then turns west on E Cheatam Street, then south again on N Division Street to intersect SR 5 (E Main Street) in Downtown. It then travels concurrently with SR 5 (now along S 1st Street) to intersect US 45W/SR 184/SR 431 in southern Union City. It then travels south along US 45W/SR 5, leaving Union City and intersecting SR 216 along the way. It then separates from US 45W/SR 5 near Rives, and turns west. In Troy, It intersects with US 51/SR 3 again, running concurrently for a short ways before separating and turning west again into downtown Troy. Once in town, it then intersects with SR 184 (old US 51) in the heart of Troy. It then leaves Troy, still going west, and enters Hornbeak and has an intersection with SR 183. It continues west to just south of Samburg, to intersect and run concurrently with SR 22, where it becomes a primary highway. SR 21/SR 22 then run along the shores of Reelfoot Lake and cross the Hill-Talley Bridge over the Obion River and enter Lake County.

The highway then turns west again to enter Tiptonville and they soon come to an intersection with SR 78. SR 22 downgrades to secondary here while SR 21 remains primary. They then continue into downtown to come to an intersection between Church Street and Cedar Street, where SR 22 then separates and turns north along Cedar Street, while SR 21 downgrades to a secondary highway and continues west on Church Street to the banks of the Mississippi River, where SR 21 ends and the road continues as Tiptonville ferry rd. along the Tennessee-Obion Levee.

Whites Creek, Tennessee

Whites Creek is a neighborhood of Nashville in the northern part of Davidson County, Tennessee. The community is named for the creek of the same name running north-south along U.S. Route 431. The Whites Creek area has its own US Post Office, with the ZIP Code 37189.

The historic Whites Creek District was established in 1780 and has some of the best preserved examples of the architectural and historical significance of this era in Middle Tennessee.[citation needed] It is now a part of Metro Nashville.

The criminal James Gang visited Whites Creek and rested there in the 1800s. Gang member Bill Ryan was arrested on March 25, 1881 in Whites Creek, prompting gang leaders Frank and Jesse James to leave the area.[citation needed]

Yorkville, Tennessee

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 293 people, 116 households, and 88 families residing in the city. The population density was 206.4 people per square mile (79.7/km²). There were 125 housing units at an average density of 88.1 per square mile (34.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.66% White and 0.34% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.34% of the population.

There were 116 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city, the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

Whitesburg, Tennessee

Whitesburg is an unincorporated community in eastern Hamblen County, Tennessee.[1] The small, rural community is located along U.S. Route 11E. Whitesburg is bordered by Russellville on the west and Bulls Gap on the east. A U.S. post office and two schools, both parts of the Hamblen County school system, are located in Whitesburg. Whitesburg is a close, mainly farming community. It is home to a variety of people, from farmers to lawyers.

North American cougar

The North American cougar (Puma concolor couguar), is a population of the mountain lion in North America. It was once commonly found in eastern North America, and is still prevalent in the western half of the continent.[3] It is the biggest wild cat in North America.[4]

The subspecies P. c. couguar encompasses populations found in the United States, western Canada, the critically endangered Florida panther population, the extinct[5]eastern cougar, Mexico and Central America, and possibly South America northwest of the Andes Mountains.[3] Western populations of the cougar are occasionally seen in the former range of the extinct eastern population. The population in Costa Rica had been listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List.[6]

It has a solid tan-colored coat without spots. This cougar reportedly weighs 25–80 kg (55–176 pounds).[8] By comparison, a jaguar in the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve on the Mexican Pacific coast would weigh only about 50 kg (110 lb), making it similar to a female cougar.[9]

Whiteville, Tennessee

Whiteville is a town in Hardeman County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,148 at the 2000 census and 4,638 at the 2010 census,[7] showing an increase of 1,490. Whiteville is the location of two privately owned prisons, Whiteville Correctional Facility and Hardeman County Correctional Center.

Whiteville is located in northwestern Hardeman County at 35°19′28″N 89°8′45″W / 35.32444°N 89.14583°W / 35.32444; -89.14583 (35.324496, −89.145721).[8]U.S. Route 64 runs through the southern part of the town, leading southeast 11 miles (18 km) to Bolivar, the county seat, and southwest 13 miles (21 km) to Somerville. Tennessee State Route 100 runs east from Whiteville 30 miles (48 km) to Henderson. State Route 179 runs north from the center of Whiteville 15 miles (24 km) to Interstate 40 at Willis.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Whiteville has a total area of 2.7 square miles (7.1 km2), all land.[7] The town is drained by the headwaters of Hickory Creek, which flows north to the Hatchie River.
