Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Kaycee WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Kaycee WY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Kaycee WY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Kaycee WY clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Wyoming or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Kaycee WYAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kaycee WY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kaycee home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Kaycee WY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kaycee WY area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Kaycee WY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Kaycee WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Kaycee medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Kaycee WY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kaycee WY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
