Sonographer Work Description

Marble City OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Marble City OK clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Marble City OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Marble City OK clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Oklahoma or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Marble City OKAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Marble City OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Marble City home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Marble City OK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Marble City OK area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Marble City OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Marble City OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Marble City healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Marble City OK home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marble City OK area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Marble City, Oklahoma

Marble City (often simply called Marble) is a town in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 263 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.7 percent from 242 at the 2000 census,[3] making it the seventh-largest town by population in Sequoyah County, after Gans and before Moffett.

The area around what is now Marble City was considered part of Lovely County, Arkansas Territory until 1829. In that year, the Federal Government began moving the Western Cherokees from other parts of Arkansas Territory into this area, then called Nicksville. Non-Indian settlers were ordered to vacate, and the Arkansas Territorial Legislature ended its claim to the land. Dwight Mission took over Nicksville.[4] The area became part of Indian Territory.

A post office named Kidron was established in this area in 1835, to serve the Cherokee settlers in this area. The office moved to another location in 1858, where it was named Marble Salt Works. Another Kidron post office opened near Dwight Mission in 1859, but was discontinued in 1869. In 1869, the Post Office opened a new location named Kedron. By 1895, when commercial-scale quarrying of marble began in this area, the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (later known as the Kansas City Southern Railway) laid tracks through the area, the Kedron post office moved closer to the railroad and a marble quarry, and was renamed as Marble. The name was chosen because of its proximity to Oklahoma's only true marble outcrops. Commercial quarrying began there in 1895. The Ozark Marble Company operated the quarry from 1906 to 1914, producing material for building construction.[4][a]
