Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Harrah OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Harrah OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Harrah OK ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Harrah OK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Harrah OKAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Harrah OK outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Harrah home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Harrah OK ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Harrah OK area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Harrah OK employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Harrah OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Harrah health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Harrah OK home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Harrah OK area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
