Fountain NC sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Fountain NC, the next step is to begin the process of selecting a school. First, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary education to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? Most students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and other qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Fountain NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Fountain NC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Fountain NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Fountain NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Fountain NCAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Fountain NC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Fountain home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Fountain NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Fountain NC area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Fountain NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Fountain NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Fountain health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Fountain NC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Fountain NC area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
