Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Burlingham NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Burlingham NY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Burlingham NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Burlingham NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Burlingham NYAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Burlingham NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Burlingham home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Burlingham NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Burlingham NY area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Burlingham NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Burlingham NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Burlingham medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Burlingham NY residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Burlingham NY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1879, and he received a Bachelor of Laws degree from Columbia University in 1881 (he received an honorary Juris Doctor degree from Columbia in 1933).

Burlingham was admitted to the New York bar in 1881. He became a leader in the field of admiralty law, and took up private practice in a series of partnerships, eventually becoming lead partner in the firm Burlingham, Veeder, Masten, & Feary, a precursor to the modern firm of Burlingham Underwood LLP, which closed in 2002.
