Ho Ho Kus NJ ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). The majority work in Ho Ho Kus NJ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them

Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ho Ho Kus NJ area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ho Ho Kus NJ health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Ho Ho Kus NJ clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Ho Ho Kus healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New Jersey healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Ho Ho Kus NJ home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Ho Ho Kus NJ area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
