Sonographer Work Summary

Freedom NH ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Freedom NH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Freedom NH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Freedom NH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in New Hampshire or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Freedom NHAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Freedom NH hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Freedom home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Freedom NH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Freedom NH area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Freedom NH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Freedom NH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Freedom health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Freedom NH residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Freedom NH area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Freedom, New Hampshire

Freedom is a town located in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,489 at the 2010 census.[1] The town's eastern boundary runs along the Maine state border. Ossipee Lake, with a resort and camps, is in the southwest of the town.

The town was once a part of Effingham called "North Effingham". Following an influx of new settlers from Maine, there was a conflict of culture and religion between them and people from the New Hampshire seacoast area who already populated Effingham. As a result, North Effingham separated into a town of its own. The community, incorporated in 1831, was appropriately named "Freedom".

The town was the setting for the children's fantasy book The Enormous Egg by Oliver Butterworth, first published in 1956 but reissued years later, and a 2001 broadcast of This American Life, "House on Loon Lake". The episode depicted an abandoned house explored by young boys in town for summer camp at Loon Lake.
