Sonogram Tech Job Description

Barnstead NH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Barnstead NH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Barnstead NH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Barnstead NH hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New Hampshire or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Barnstead NHAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Barnstead NH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Barnstead home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Barnstead NH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Barnstead NH area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Barnstead NH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Barnstead NH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Barnstead medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with New Hampshire healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Barnstead NH residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Barnstead NH area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Barnstead, New Hampshire

Barnstead is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,593 at the 2010 census.[1] Home to the Suncook Lakes, Barnstead includes the villages of Center Barnstead, Barnstead Parade (identified as "Barnstead" on topographic maps) and South Barnstead.

The town was granted by Governor William Dummer on 20 May 1727[2] to the Reverend Joseph Adams and others. Settlement commenced in 1765, and two years later Barnstead was incorporated as a town by Governor John Wentworth. Many of the settlers came from Barnstable, Massachusetts, and Hempstead, New York - the name is taken from these two.[3]

Although not mountainous, the terrain forms large swells, good for grazing. By 1830, when the population was 2,047, the town contained about 2,500 sheep.[4]Farmers found the soil easy to cultivate and productive. The Suncook River and its tributaries provided water power for mills. By 1859, industries included a woolen cloth factory, seven sawmills, four shingle mills, four clapboard mills, one grooving machine, one turning machine, and two tanneries. Barnstead manufactured large amounts of lumber, which it supplied to neighboring towns.[5]
