Broadview MT ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Broadview MT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Broadview MT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Broadview MT clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Montana or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Broadview MTAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Broadview MT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Broadview home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Broadview MT ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Broadview MT area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Broadview MT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Broadview MT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Broadview medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Montana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Broadview MT home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Broadview MT area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
