Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Climax MI ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Climax MI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Climax MI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Climax MI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Michigan or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Climax MIAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Climax MI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Climax home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Climax MI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Climax MI area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Climax MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Climax MI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Climax health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Michigan healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Climax MI home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Climax MI area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
