One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Cobb Island MD ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cobb Island MD area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Cobb Island MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Cobb Island MD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Cobb Island health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Cobb Island MD residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cobb Island MD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
