Sonogram Tech Work Description

West Paris ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in West Paris ME hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

West Paris ME ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through West Paris ME hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in West Paris MEAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local West Paris ME hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your West Paris home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask West Paris ME ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the West Paris ME area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many West Paris ME health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with West Paris ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the West Paris health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their West Paris ME home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the West Paris ME area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    West Paris, Maine

It began as part of Paris, granted by the Massachusetts General Court in 1771 to Captain Joshua Fuller and his company of 64 soldiers as payment for their service to the colony. First settled in 1779, the land was considered superior for pasturage and hay crops, and orchards were large and productive.[4]Mills were built along the Little Androscoggin River. The Paris Manufacturing Company, which was started modestly by Henry Franklin Morton in 1861 at West Sumner, grew into an important manufacturer. Near the Grand Trunk Railway depot in West Paris, it built a factory to make products including sleds, skis, wagons, step ladders, wheelbarrows, ironing boards, children's rolltop desks and other furniture.[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.40 square miles (63.20 km2), of which, 24.24 square miles (62.78 km2) of it is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km2) is water.[1] West Paris is drained by the Little Androscoggin River.

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, West Paris has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[7]
