So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? Many students will start by searching for colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this article. Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Cliff Island ME ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cliff Island ME hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Cliff Island ME ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up through Cliff Island ME hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Maine or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Cliff Island MEAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cliff Island ME hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cliff Island home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Cliff Island ME ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Cliff Island ME area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cliff Island ME employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have associations with Cliff Island ME hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Cliff Island medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Maine healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Cliff Island ME home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Cliff Island ME area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Cliff Island

Cliff Island is an island in Casco Bay Maine. It is part of the city of Portland, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the island had a year-round population of approximately 60 people. In the summer, the island's population grows to about 200, despite the fact that it is the only year-round inhabited island in Casco Bay with no paved roads. Originally named Crotch Island for its H-shape and natural harbors, the name was changed to end mail mix-ups with several other islands in Maine.[citation needed]

In the early 20th century the island's inns were a draw for summer tourists. There are no hotels any longer, but many homes are available for weekly rentals or longer. While there are no public services, residents enjoy a community hall, a tennis court, baseball field, and playground. The residents are served by a USPS Post Office,[1] fire department, and one-room school for elementary grades.[2] While the postal service has considering closing the office in the past, the islanders have managed to keep it in operation for six hours a day.[3]

Cliff Island residents (also known as Cliff Islanders) travel back and forth to the mainland via the Casco Bay Lines ferry service. The ride takes about two hours. Cliff Islanders mostly buy groceries in Portland, but there are a gas station and a small store on the island. In the summer, tourists taking the ferry as a cruise often step off to enjoy an ice-cream or pizza at the café.[citation needed]
