White Marsh, Maryland

In 1965, the largely undeveloped northeast corridor was identified by Baltimore County as the preferred site for intensive development. A town center was proposed to be located west of Belair Road at the planned intersection of White Marsh and Walther Boulevards.

The Harry T. Campbell Sons Corporation owned thousands of acres of land to the east of the planned town center, on both sides of Interstate 95. The land was bought in the 1930s and was being mined of its natural sand and gravel deposits. The Campbell family merged its sand and gravel business with an international building supply company. A new family-owned entity was charged with rejuvenating the family's property in northeast Baltimore County, which was covered with deep craters and pits.

In January 1943, the Cowenton Volunteer Fire Company was founded to counter the threat of incendiary bombings from the Axis Powers during the ongoing Second World War. The volunteer fire department, renamed the White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company in 2003, currently maintains a fire department and five vehicles, including two fire engines and an ambulance. [2]

White Plains, Maryland

White Plains is an unincorporated community located in Charles County, Maryland, in the United States, just south of Waldorf. It is located at latitude 38°35'25" North; longitude 76°56'26" West. The United States Postal Service has assigned White Plains the ZIP Code 20695. While the commercial portion of White Plains lies along U.S. Route 301, the largest concentration of residences with the White Plains mailing address is actually six to seven miles to the west in developments located near Billingsley Road (see the article Bryans Road, Maryland).[citation needed] The area is experiencing population sprawl from the adjacent unincorporated communities of Waldorf and St. Charles, features new office parks and a scenic new rail trail [2]. The Charles County Department of Health is headquartered in White Plains, and a public golf course is also located there. Plans to complete an east-west connector road in the area were mired in controversy because of alleged adverse effects on the environment.

Whiteford, Maryland

The town, a part of the Whiteford-Cardiff Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Until 1978, this community was served by the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad at milepost 42.4.[2][3] Also on the National Register are the Broad Creek Soapstone Quarries and Slate Ridge School.[2]

Willards, Maryland

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 958 people, 356 households, and 256 families residing in the town. The population density was 895.3 inhabitants per square mile (345.7/km2). There were 398 housing units at an average density of 372.0 per square mile (143.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.7% White, 8.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5% of the population.

There were 356 households of which 43.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 18.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.1% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.13.

The median age in the town was 32.6 years. 28.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.9% were from 25 to 44; 24.7% were from 45 to 64; and 8.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 49.1% male and 50.9% female.

Williamsport, Maryland

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Williamsport has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[10]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,137 people, 960 households, and 543 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,054.8 inhabitants per square mile (793.4/km2). There were 1,080 housing units at an average density of 1,038.5 per square mile (401.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.6% White, 2.5% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.

There were 960 households of which 25.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.4% were non-families. 38.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.73.

Milford Mill, Maryland

The true name of the area is "Milford", but the name "Milford Mill" has stuck with the community. The name "Milford Mill" comes from the name of an old mill located in nearby Pikesville along Milford Mill Road.[2]

Milford Mill is near the Baltimore County communities of Pikesville, Randallstown, and Woodlawn, around the intersection of Liberty Road and Milford Mill Road. Some areas of Milford Mill are as follows:

Windsor Mill is an area near Woodlawn that is similar to Milford Mill. Some of the main roads in the area include Windsor Mill Road, Windsor Boulevard, and Rolling Road. Landmarks in this area include Windsor Mill Middle School and Rutherford Business Park.

Washington Grove, Maryland

Washington Grove is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 555 at the 2010 United States Census. The Washington Grove Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.[7]

A group of Methodists began the tradition of having camp meetings in the area around 1800.[8] Camp meetings were a tradition where a group of Methodists would gather in a forest clearing to worship and socialize.[8][9] Benches were arranged in a circle or oval with an elevated preachers' stand in the middle.[8] Tents surrounded the area along with carriages and wagons behind them.[8] Services lasted well into the night.[8] The camp meetings provided cultural and spiritual improvement to those who attended.[8]

In 1873, a committee from the Foundry Methodist Church, located at 14th and G streets NW in Washington, D.C., began a search for a permanent location to hold annual camp meetings.[8] They wanted a location with sufficient space for thousands of attendees, a supply of clean water, and a shaded location to provide relief from the summer sun.[8] They wanted the location to be less than a day's trip from Washington, D.C., and protection from the sale of liquor, because Methodists did not believe in drinking alcohol.[8]

Wingate test

The ergonometer test (also known as the ergonometer Anaerobic Test (WAnT)) is an anaerobic exercise test, most often performed on a stationary bicycle, that measures peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity.[1] The test, which can also be performed on an arm crank ergometer, consists of a set time pedalling at maximum speed against a given resistance.[2] The prototype test based on the Cumming’s test was introduced in 1974,[3] at the Wingate Institute[citation needed] and has undergone modifications as time has progressed. The Wingate test has also been used as a basis to design newer tests in the same vein,[4] and others that use running as the exercise instead of cycling.[5]Sprint interval testing such as is similar to the construction of the Wingate test has been shown to increase both aerobic and anaerobic performance.[6]

To determine testing procedure validity, one must test the protocol against a "gold standard" trusted to elicit "true" values. In instances where there is such a standard, such as hydrostatic weighing to determine body composition, this is easy.[7] There is however no such standard protocol for the determination of either anaerobic capacity or power[2] Due to this problem, the Wingate test has instead been compared with sport performance, sport specialty, and laboratory findings. These comparisons have determined that the Wingate test is measuring what it claims to measure, and is a good indicator of these measurements.[2] Other references question the validity because the usual method of calculating the resistance of a brake band loaded with weights does not take into account all aspects of rope-brake theory and overestimates the actual force by 12-15%. [8]

The Wingate test is believed to show two things: all-out peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity.[1] These two values have been reported as important factors in sports with quick, all-out efforts. Short sprinting events rely heavily upon the anaerobic energy pathways during execution,[2] which leads to speculation that greater performance in a Wingate test can predict success in these events. This has not been proven, and the more applicable theory would be that improvements in Wingate scores could predict improvements in sprinting times.

Welcome, Maryland

It is 7 miles from La Plata on Rt 6 West. The Goose Bay campground and marina are also located in Welcome.[1]Rosemary Lawn, a plantation owned since the 18th century by the Barnes-Compton family, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.[2]

Wittman, Maryland

Wittman is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland, United States.[1] Wittman is located at the intersection of Pot Pie Road, New Road, and Cummings Road south of Claiborne. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 21676.[2] The Flying Cloud (log canoe) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.[3]
