Thomson, Georgia

Thomson (originally called Slashes) is a city in McDuffie County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,778 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of McDuffie County.[4] Thomson's nickname is "The Camellia City of the South", in honor of the thousands of camellia plants throughout the city. Thomson was founded in 1837 as a depot on the Georgia Railroad. It was renamed in 1853 for railroad official John Edgar Thomson and incorporated February 15, 1854 as a town and in 1870 as a city. It is part of the Augusta – Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Old Rock House, built in 1785, is said to be one of Georgia's oldest documented houses with its original design intact. Built by Thomas Ansley, the home is said to be the home of ancestors of former president Jimmy Carter.

Tyrone, Georgia

Tyrone is a town in Fayette County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,879 at the 2010 census,[4] up from 3,916 in 2000. The estimated population in 2014 was 7,135.[5] It is a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Tyrone is located in the northwest corner of Fayette County at 33°28′25″N 84°35′28″W / 33.47361°N 84.59111°W / 33.47361; -84.59111 (33.473563, -84.591229).[8] It is bordered to the south by Peachtree City and to the west by Coweta County, across Line Creek.

Georgia State Route 74, the Joel Cowan Parkway, passes through Tyrone, leading north 5 miles (8 km) to Interstate 85 on the south side of Fairburn. Downtown Atlanta is 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Tyrone via SR 74 and I-85.

Warm Springs, Georgia

Warm Springs, originally named Bullochville (after the Bulloch family, the family of Martha Bulloch Roosevelt), first came to prominence in the 19th century as a spa town, because of its mineral springs which flow constantly at nearly 90 °F (32 °C). Residents of Georgia, particularly Savannah, began spending vacations at Bullochville in the late 18th century as a way to escape yellow fever, finding the number of warm springs in the vicinity of Bullochville very attractive. In the late 19th century traveling to the warm springs was attractive as a way to get away from Atlanta.[clarification needed] Traveling by railroad to Durand, they would then go to Bullochville. One of the places benefiting from this was the Meriwether Inn. Once the automobile became popular in the early 20th century, the tourists began going elsewhere, starting the decline of the Meriwether Inn.[4][5]

In 1921, Franklin Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness, diagnosed at the time as polio, now thought[by whom?] to be Guillain–Barré syndrome. He tried to regain strength in his legs by bathing and exercising in the warm water. His first time in Warm Springs was October 1924. He went to a resort in the town whose attraction was a permanent 88-degree natural spring, but whose main house was described as "ramshackle". It became famous as the Little White House, where Roosevelt lived while president, because of his paralytic illness. He died there in 1945 and it is now a public museum. Roosevelt first came in the 1920s in hopes that the warm water would improve his paraplegia. He was a constant visitor for two decades, and renamed the town from Bullochville to Warm Springs. The town is still home to the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation (Roosevelt's former polio hospital) which remains a world-renowned comprehensive rehabilitation center including a physical rehabilitation hospital and vocational rehabilitation unit. The springs are not available for public use as a bath/spa resort, but they are used by the Roosevelt Institute for therapeutic purposes.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 485 people, 172 households, and 107 families residing in the city. The population density was 409.7 people per square mile (158.7/km²). There were 208 housing units at an average density of 175.7 per square mile (68.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 67.22% White, 31.75% African American, and 1.03% from two or more races.

White, Georgia

White is located along U.S. Highway 411, 3 miles (5 km) north of Interstate 75. It is a bedroom community of Cartersville which is located 9 miles (14 km) to the south, but they are connected by a chain of homes and retail shops.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 693 people, 258 households, and 197 families residing in the city. The population density was 764.8 people per square mile (294.0/km²). There were 274 housing units at an average density of 302.4 per square mile (116.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.81% White, 2.89% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.87% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.60% of the population.

There were 258 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.04.

Wrens, Georgia

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,314 people, 903 households, and 632 families residing in the city. The population density was 760.1 people per square mile (293.9/km²). There were 1,030 housing units at an average density of 338.3 per square mile (130.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.17% African American, 33.19% White, 0.09% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 0.78% of the population.

There were 903 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% were married couples living together, 31.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the city, the population was spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 77.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.9 males.

Tifton, Georgia

The area's public schools are administered by the Tift County School District. Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College has its main campus in Tifton. Southern Regional Technical College and the University of Georgia also have Tifton campuses.

Sites in the area include the Coastal Plain Research Arboretum, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and the Georgia Museum of Agriculture & Historic Village. The Tifton Residential Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tifton is located in south central Georgia along Interstate 75, which runs north to south through the city, leading north 167 mi (269 km) to Atlanta and south 45 mi (72 km) to Valdosta. Other highways that pass through the city include U.S. Route 41, U.S. Route 82, U.S. Route 319, and Georgia State Route 125.

Unadilla, Georgia

Unadilla is a city in Dooly County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,796 at the 2010 census,[4] up from 2,772 in 2000. The name is a native term for "gathering place". Dooly State Prison is located in the northeast corner of the city.

Unadilla is located in northern Dooly County at 32°15′35″N 83°44′12″W / 32.259796°N 83.736535°W / 32.259796; -83.736535.[5]U.S. Route 41 passes through the center of town as Pine Street, leading north 16 miles (26 km) to Perry and south 13 miles (21 km) to Vienna, the Dooly County seat. Interstate 75 passes through the west side of Unadilla, with access from Exits 121 and 122. I-75 leads north 43 miles (69 km) to Macon and south 61 miles (98 km) to Tifton. Georgia State Route 230 passes through Unadilla as Second Street and Borum Street, leading southwest 11 miles (18 km) to Byromville and east 18 miles (29 km) to Hawkinsville.

As of 2000[update], there were 2,772 people, 655 households, and 434 families residing in the city.[2] The population density was 532.9 people per square mile (205.8/km²). There were 739 housing units at an average density of 142.1 per square mile (54.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 34.52% White, 62.12% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 1.66% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.99% of the population.

Warner Robins, Georgia

Warner Robins is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, located in Houston County in the central part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 66,588. From 2000 to 2010, the Warner Robins city population grew by 36.4% (from 48,804 people to 66,588).

Warner Robins is a part of the larger Macon-Warner Robins Combined Statistical Area, with an estimated 2017 population of 420,693. Warner Robins Air Depot was built in 1942 just outside the city limits. Its expansion has attracted more residents.

Warner Robins was founded in 1942 from the community of Wellston. It was named for General Augustine Warner Robins (1882-1940) of the United States Air Force. It was incorporated as a town in 1943 and as a city in 1956.[4]

Wrightsville, Georgia

Wrightsville is a city in Johnson County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,757 at the 2010 census,[4] up from 2,223 at the 2000 census. The city limits include Johnson State Prison on the northeast side of town. Wrightsville was established February 23, 1886, and was named for John B. Wright, one of the members of the committee responsible for selecting the site for the town. The city is the county seat of Johnson County.

Wrightsville is located west of the center of Johnson County at 32°43′30″N 82°43′13″W / 32.72500°N 82.72028°W / 32.72500; -82.72028 (32.725126, -82.720289).[5]U.S. Route 319 passes through the city center on Elm Street; it leads northeast 19 miles (31 km) to Bartow and southwest 18 miles (29 km) to Dublin. State Routes 15 and 57 also pass through the center of Wrightsville. SR-15 leads north 19 miles (31 km) to Sandersville and southeast 17 miles (27 km) to Adrian, while SR-57 leads west 37 miles (60 km) to Irwinton and southeast 25 miles (40 km) to Swainsboro.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Wrightsville has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2), of which 3.5 square miles (9.1 km2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 2.20%, are water.[4] The city is drained by tributaries of the Ohoopee River.
