Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Winchester KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Winchester KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Winchester KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Winchester KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Winchester home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Winchester KY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Winchester KY area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Winchester KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Winchester KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Winchester health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Winchester KY residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Winchester KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
